Sage is considered one of the oldest and most widely used culinary herbs. It is used fresh and dried in the kitchen for seasoning meat dishes, soups, herb butter, cottage cheese and salads. Sage is especially popular and well known as a medicinal herb. The plant with the gray-green, felty leaves combines many good features: It helps with colds and inflammation in the mouth and throat, but is also considered to be antiperspirant and appetite-stimulating. The botanical name, Salvia, is no coincidence. It comes from salvare, the Latin word for healing. In addition, flowering sage is a beautiful sight - and useful in addition: As a nectar-rich plant it is a great bee pasture.
Having an ointment plant in the herb bed is a real benefit in many ways. At the same time, the herb is easy to maintain and frugal. If you do not have your own garden, you can also pull it in a bucket on the balcony or the terrace.

The classic kitchen sage Salvia officinalis can be sowed directly from May. It is better, however, to sow it out a few weeks early in warm conditions at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius and then put it out as a small plant. You can start preculture in March. Make sure that you cover the seeds with minimal or no soil, but only lightly press them on the surface. Sage is one of the light germs. These plants need light so that the seed will rise. This should be the case after about two weeks.
