The frost hard black pine with its rich green, in pairs standing stiff needles is drawn in Japan because of their thick, breaking bark and their cut tolerance like bonsai. The tree grows rather irregularly upright to upright and seeks his own way.

The Japanese black pine is a tree species of the coasts. It therefore also tolerates salt water spray. It inhabits the lowlands there, but also areas up to 1000 meters altitude. There, it forms large pure populations, but also often occurs in the company of mixed deciduous forests.

It is the most frequently reforested and used tree in Japan after the Cinnamon fir.
