The evergreen, mighty and fast-growing Himalayan cedar, called by the Indians Deodar, develops into a mighty tree and forms 3-4 cm long needles. It grows at altitudes of 1200-3000 meters and is almost eradicated at their natural sites. It was first introduced to Europe in 1822. In the French Pau in the Pyrenees is a huge, 35 -meter-high copy of 1875. Also in the southwest of Germany are some Himalayan cedars. Unfortunately they do not or rarely flower in Europe.

The unique growth habit of the Himalayan cedar also makes them immediately recognizable to the layman, because the evergreen conifer drives its main branches horizontally from the trunk with its drooping tips, thus growing almost more in width than in height. Their blue-green to gray-blue soft needles are in clumps on the short and occasionally isolated on the long shoots. They are with a length of four to five centimeters to the longest of all cedar species.
