The garden hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus), also called shrub marshmallow, belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae). The small shrub originally comes from Southeast Asia and has its main distribution in the temperate and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including China and India. There the Hibiscus syriacus is mostly known under the name Sharon Rose or Syrian Marshmallow. It grows mainly on the edge of streams and rivers and in damp forests. But the garden hibiscus also feels at home in drier, rocky locations. In South Korea, the shrub marshmallow was chosen as the national flower and its flower was immortalized on the one-won coin.

After about 4 to 10 days, the seeds begin to germinate and are pricked into pots a few weeks later.
