The Traveler's Tree (Ravenala madagascariensis) originally comes from Madagascar and adorns the island nation's coat of arms in a stylized form. It is the only species of the genus and botanically belongs to the Strelitziae family. Today the travelers' tree is widely used as an ornamental plant in the tropics, and has been cultivated in Germany since the mid-19th century. It is still more often found in botanical collections in warm houses than in private households - as a houseplant, the travelers' tree is still a real rarity.
