A fast-growing, medium-sized tree up to 20 m high that briefly sheds its leaves. It has large, pinnate leaves that can be up to 55 cm long, is related to mahogany and comes from the mountain and fog walls of the Andes in northwestern South America, where it grows at altitudes between 1000 and 3600 m. It provides beautiful, weather- and insect-resistant, fragrant, relatively light wood, but is also a beautiful ornamental plant for temperate regions.
