The Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica) is at home in the dry forests of China and Korea. The pagoda tree came to Europe in the middle of the 18th century because of its majestic appearance and opulent bloom. The name "japonicum" is misleading: Although the first seeds came from Japan, the pagoda tree was also introduced there.
